Paradise Lost and Restored: 400 Years of Garden Design in Oxfordshire

The history of English garden design can be told in different ways, but rarely can it be told by looking at one garden. The Oxford Botanic Garden was founded at the beginning of the 17th century and its design bears all the hallmarks of that period. Through the next 400 years successive head gardeners changed the features reflecting the art of gardening, and very occasionally the science of botany.

Join botanist and international expert Timothy Walker as he shares in this lively and beautifully illustrated talk, how the art of gardening has changed, or perhaps has not, in four centuries in Oxfordshire and how the Oxford Botanic Garden now reflects garden design at the beginning of the 21st century.

Timothy Walker read Botany at University College Oxford, trained at the Savill Garden Windsor and was a student at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. In 1995 he was awarded a Master of Horticulture by the Royal Horticultural Society of London. He has worked at the University of Oxford Botanical Garden and Harcourt Arboretum as General Foreman, Head Gardener and finally as Director. Over the years he has given more than 2000 talks and lectures in Britain, Ireland, Germany, France, North America, and Australia.

If you haven’t heard him, his lectures are the equivalent of sparkling vintage champagne” - Val Bourne (Oxford Times)
